Governance, Folklore & Cultural Leadership
I hold a senior governance and leadership role within the Dalmatian Cultural Society, one of New Zealand’s oldest and largest cultural organisations, representing a community of more than 800 members. While the work is pro-bono, it could easily become a full-time job!
My involvement includes both governance and hands-on cultural leadership. As a member of the Society’s Management Committee (its Board, or governance group), I contribute to strategic decision-making, organisational direction, and oversight of operations, including the management of paid staff.
Alongside this, I serve as Folklore Manager, a role that places me at the centre of the Society’s cultural activity. I liaise closely with six folklore and cultural groups within the club, providing leadership, coordination, and support, and formally reporting back to the Management Committee. This role bridges culture and governance, ensuring artistic, educational, and community objectives are aligned with the Society’s wider strategy. I liaise with other Dalmatian cultural clubs across New Zealand, with a particular focus on Northland, supporting collaboration, shared events, and the strengthening of inter-club relationships.
My experience includes the planning and delivery of major events such as the Dallies in the Valley cultural festival ( large-scale concerts, fundraisers, and both domestic and international performing tours.
In addition, I contribute significantly to the Society’s written communications, including newsletters, social media, and member communications. My next project is a review and update of our website. This work focuses on strengthening engagement, documenting cultural heritage, and clearly communicating the Society’s activities and values to its members and the wider community.
Across all roles, my contribution combines governance discipline with deep cultural engagement, ensuring the Dalmatian Cultural Society continues to thrive as a living, evolving cultural institution..
